Sherwood Forest vs. Whinfell Forest - Which is Best?
Planning a holiday at Center Parcs can be incredibly exciting, but deciding which village to choose might present a bit of a dilemma. Sherwood Forest and Whinfell Forest each offer unique features and cater to different types of holidaymakers. To make your decision easier, we’ve outlined the key advantages of each, along with some general advice to help you select the best option for your next getaway.

Advantages of Sherwood Forest

Larger lake:
Sherwood Forest flaunts a more extensive lake compared to Whinfell Forest. This not only provides a picturesque setting but also allows for a greater variety of water-based activities, including kayaking, sailing, and paddleboarding.

Larger Sports Plaza:
The sports centre at Sherwood is notably more substantial, offering a vast array of facilities and activities. Whether you're into racquet sports, fitness classes, or adrenaline-pumping activities like indoor climbing, you'll find ample options to keep everyone entertained.

Superior crazy golf:
Crazy golf enthusiasts will delight in Sherwood’s superb course. Known for its creative design and well-maintained landscape, it's a hit among families and competitive friends alike.

Outdoor Village Centre:
One of Sherwood’s standout features is its outdoor village center. This open-air setting enhances the connection with nature and provides a charming, relaxed atmosphere as you stroll through shops, cafes, and restaurants.

More spacious layout:
Sherwood Forest is more spread out, offering a sense of space and tranquillity. This can be particularly appealing if you prefer a bit of seclusion and don’t wish to be in close proximity to other holidaymakers. The expansive layout also means there's plenty of room to explore at your own pace.

Brilliant kids pool
The kids pool in Sherwood is fantastic. Much bigger with more things for kids of all ages to do.

Advantages of Whinfell Forest

Indoor Subtropical Paradise is the Village Center:
Whinfell Forest boasts a unique village center that is entirely indoors, mimicking a subtropical paradise. This makes it particularly great for winter holidays or when the weather is less predictable, ensuring you can enjoy the village amenities regardless of the climate.

Ideal for bad weather:
Because of its indoor-centric design, Whinfell is perfect if you anticipate rainy days or cold weather. Most activities and amenities are accessible without having to brave the elements, making your stay comfortable and convenient.

Condensed layout:
Whinfell Forest’s more condensed layout means that most of the activities and facilities are centrally located between the Village Center and the Sports Plaza. This makes it easier to get around, especially if you’re traveling with young children or elderly family members who might find longer walks challenging.

Cozy atmosphere around the smaller lake:
The smaller lake at Whinfell adds to the village's cozy and intimate feel. It’s centrally located, which makes it a favorite spot for leisurely walks, picnics, and quick access to various activities without the need to venture far.

Great for young children and those with mobility issues:
The compact nature of Whinfell makes it an excellent choice for families with very young children or those with mobility issues. The short distances between key points of interest reduce the need for extensive walking, making it easier to navigate and enjoy all that the village has to offer.

General advice and takeaway
Choosing between Sherwood Forest and Whinfell Forest essentially boils down to personal preference and the specific needs of your group.

  • Sherwood Forest: Opt for this village if you enjoy outdoor activities, desire more space and seclusion, and wish to explore a larger sports center and lake.
  • Whinfell Forest: This village is a better fit if you have very young children or someone with mobility issues in your party. If you're planning your visit during the colder months or expect inclement weather Whinfell has the Village Centre inside which is a huge benefit.

Additionally, be aware that the prices for breaks at Whinfell can closely follow the Scottish school holidays. This could impact your planning and budget, so it’s worth checking the dates carefully.
